The City of McHenry Police Department is charged with the duty to preserve life and property. The Department enforces the laws of the United States Constitution and the State of Illinois in a
fair and impartial manner. While there are certain crimes that cannot be
deterred, crimes committed against property and against innocent victims in public places are reduced by Police patrol.
In deploying patrol forces to deter crime and to inspire public confidence in its ability to ensure a peaceful environment, the Department attempts to strike a balance between the desirable
deterrent effect of visible patrol and any undesirable appearance of oppression. The administration of criminal justice consists of the identification, arrest, prosecution, punishment and rehabilitation of a law violator.
The actual costs of crime are difficult to measure; however, it is possible to observe the steadily rising cost of lost and stolen property. To minimize the losses due to crime, the City of
McHenry Police Department makes every effort to recover lost or stolen property, to identify its owner and ensure its prompt return.
The Department has adopted the
Community Oriented Policing philosophy. The City is divided into different areas and Officers are assigned to specific areas. This aids in their getting to know the people and the problems inherent in each area. Their aim is to identify potential problems and find a way to solve problems within their assigned area. Community Policing is a philosophy, management style and organizational strategy that promotes pro-active problem-solving and Police-community partnerships to address the causes of crime and fear as well as other community issues. Community policing is tough on crime; it provides a more comprehensive and creative, and thus a more effective approach to policing.
