Nixle – Community
Networking
The McHenry Police Department strives to provide the McHenry
community with the highest level of service and believes this is one
more example of that.
The City of McHenry Police Department is adding a
new networking component to their communication arsenal, and it's
not Facebook or Twitter but quite similar. It's called Nixle, a
community information service that enables public entities to blast
information — including Amber Alerts, advisories and community and
traffic information — directly to residents by e-mail and text. For
example, agencies can send an alert to a specific neighborhood or to
neighborhoods within a two-mile or 50-mile radius, depending on the
circumstances.
McHenry
Police like the service because it has a secure server and only
users who have been authorized by Nixle can post information on the
network, which ensures that residents get information from a
reliable source.
Unlike
its counterparts, Nixle provides only one-way communication with no
advertising and the service is free to agencies and residents. This
removes the possibility of false notifications due to social
networking hackers. Residents can set up an account to receive
information by going to the Nixle Web site.
